Mark Dave Nicolas, one of the country’s brightest young stars in track and field and a proud member of the Adamson University athletics program, has passed away at the age of 18. His sudden death on Wednesday, April 29, has brought deep sorrow to the sporting community, with tributes pouring in from fans, teammates, coaches, and fellow athletes across the nation.
The cause of his death has not been publicly disclosed.
In a statement shared online, the UAAP expressed its grief, saying, “The UAAP family is deeply saddened by the passing of Mark Dave Nicolas of the Adamson Boys’ Athletics Team. We extend our sincerest condolences to his bereaved family, friends, and teammates. Rest in peace, Mark.”
Nicolas was widely regarded as one of the most promising young athletes in Philippine athletics. An emerging sprinter and middle-distance standout, he gained national attention during the 2025 Palarong Pambansa in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, where he delivered a historic performance before his hometown supporters.
Representing the Ilocos Region, Nicolas clocked 1 minute and 53.20 seconds in the secondary boys’ 800-meter event, breaking a 16-year-old national junior record previously held by Salvador Garin Jr. His extraordinary showing also included gold medals in the 400-meter race and 4×400 relay, along with silver medals in the 1500-meter event and 4×100 relay.
A former standout from Piddig National High School, Nicolas also earned a silver medal at the 14th ASEAN Schools Games and competed in the Philippine Athletics Open, further proving his talent on larger stages.
Though his life was heartbreakingly brief, Mark Dave Nicolas leaves behind a legacy of excellence, discipline, and inspiration. He will be remembered not only for his speed on the track, but for the promise he carried and the pride he brought to his community.
